How to get rid of frown lines

Unlocking the Secrets to Smooth Skin: A Comprehensive Guide to Frown Line Treatment and Prevention

Frown lines are noticeable little creases that appear on our foreheads, between the eyebrows (sometimes called elevenses) , and extend around the eyes (sometimes called laughter lines or crows feet). Many people do not like how they make them feel as they get older. In this blog, we've outlined your options for enhancing your natural beauty while reversing some of the signs of ageing.

Frown lines are a natural part of the ageing process, and while we offer treatments to improve them, we also firmly believe in the power of self-love and acceptance. Understanding their causes, how to prevent them and effective treatment options to reverse them can help you to maintain a healthy, fresh and radiant complexion for years to come, and make sure you are completely happy in your skin!

What are frown lines?

Frown lines manifest in two distinct forms: dynamic and static lines. Dynamic lines worsen with facial movements, such as frowning, or squinting your eyes, while static lines are visible even when your face is at rest.

What causes frown lines?

There are so many factors that contribute to the development of these little lines, such as age, lifestyle choices, environmental exposure, and even genetics.

Age is the primary contributor to frown lines because as we age, our skin's natural production of collagen and elastin decreases, and we have had more environmental exposure leading to a loss of elasticity and firmness. On top of that, years of repeated facial expressions can cause the underlying muscles to contract, eventually resulting in the formation of lines and wrinkles. All of the other factors I mentioned above, simply help the lines on their way!

What can I do to prevent frown lines?

While frown lines may seem inevitable, the good news is there are steps you can take to slow down their appearance, and making sure to incorporate preventative measures into your skincare routine is absolutely key. This includes using the right ingredients such as retinols and Vitamin C, which promote collagen production and protect against environmental damage. We can create a skincare routine for you with medical grade skincare in our clinic, totally bespoke to your skin.

The most crucial preventive measure, and this may surprise a lot of people, is the consistent application of our all-time favourite staple - sunscreen. UV exposure, along all the other terrible things it does to our skin it creates free radicals which directly contribute to our skin’s ageing appearance by destroying the skin’s collagen. This is why daily sunscreen application is a non-negotiable step in any skincare regimen for so many reasons!

What can I do to treat frown lines?

When it comes to treating frown lines, a personalised approach is essential. Dynamic lines respond exceptionally well to anti-wrinkle injections, such as Botox, which temporarily relax the underlying muscles responsible for the wrinkles, and stop the creases forming. On the other hand, static lines may require more targeted interventions. However, whilst antiwrinkle injections may provide a ‘quick fix’ for dynamic lines, for the healing of all lines so that you are not reliant on ‘Botox’, energy-based treatments like laser therapy and RF microneedling are transformational, and skin rejuvenating injectables such as polynucleotides/exosomes plump skin and reduce lines, so they have a key role.

Can I treat frown lines with dermal fillers?

While dermal fillers can provide excellent temporary plumping effects, they are typically reserved for deeper and much more stubborn lines – they should be approached with caution, certainly for frown lines.

Great tailored skincare, preventative, and energy-based treatments should always be the first step for frown lines, using fillers as a final step. See Iain’s before and after pictures below. His frown lines were treated with Botox and polynucleotides initially, and eventually fillers between his eyebrows. The results are just incredible:

Home remedies for frown lines

We all know we can’t always trust what we see on social media, and this applies to all the amazing quick-fix solutions promising dramatic results that we see on our feeds. However, it's essential to approach home remedies with caution. Tools like micro-glow headsets may offer very temporary improvements but cannot deliver lasting results.

Investing in medical-grade skincare products and seeking professional guidance and treatments is the only way to ensure long lasting results and healthy skin.

Does Gua Sha work?

While Gua Sha is not a substitute for professional treatments, facial massage can really complement your skincare routine. These techniques promote lymphatic drainage, reduce puffiness, and improve circulation, resulting in a more radiant complexion. Coupled with a really high quality product – your skin can look immediately glowy and smooth. It’s actually a good idea to use a Gua Sha instead of your fingers to massage in products as the skin on your fingertips will absorb the product whereas a Gua Sha won’t – and all your luxury product is reserved for your face. Incorporating high-quality skincare products and adopting a consistent routine is key to long term skin health, and to have you looking and feeling amazing – so absolutely invest in some beautiful Gua Sha tools and your luxury products and really indulge in your skincare.
