Skin Hydration: Everything You Need to Know

Menopause and Skin Hydration

How does Menopause affect my skin?

Menopausal skin can feel particularly dry. This is partly due to the fact that oestrogens are responsible for the production of collagen in the skin and as that oestrogens levels are dropping, collagen production drops as well so we lose a lot of the hydration in our skin unless we take action (losing about 30% over a 5 year period).

Oestrogens are also believed to be responsible for helping the skin retain water so winter and colder weather is a really tough time for menopausal skin if you’re really prone to dryness.

Outside of menopause, hydration is really big problem in winter due to the extreme temperature changes from outside in the cold straight to inside in the warm. This can aggravate any underlying issues that you may also have with your skin.

What can you do to help your skin if you’re going through the menopause?

Retinol is one of the most important and well tested ingredients when it comes to skin care, although not as ssole stand-alone ingredient because your skin needs to work up the strength to be able to tolerate a retinol in line with other things that can also help.

Retinol works to increase the rate of skin turnover and bolster the cells so they produce more collagen, keeping your skin looking bright, maintaining the structure of the skin and slowing down the loss of collagen.

There are many ways to combat moisture loss in your skin.

Lactic Acid is very good for holding in the moisture in the skin. Also good quality Hyluronic acid serums with  multi-molecular weights of Hyaluronic Acid are perfect for adding hydration to the skin as well as a moisturizer and Hyaluronic Acid treatment masks can be an added extra.

Plus drinking PLENTY of water!

What treatments can I have to help boost hydration?

We are currently working on a new seasonal facial package for the Winter months focusing on Hydration!

As with most of the treatment in clinic, they are tailored to help the production of collagen but this season, the main focus is on boosting the skin hydration.
